The Ju Jus are probably the best-known mid-sixties band from Grand Rapids. Their appearance on the first volume of the Pebbles compilation series pretty much guaranteed their legendary status. Many of the band members went to Godwin High School in Grand Rapids. They formed around 1963, and Ray Hummel joined in 1964 after playing in some kind of jug band. Rick Stevens joined the band sometime in middle of 1965 after leaving a group called the Paeans, who recorded an unreleased single at the Fenton studio in Sparta.
