There are two known groups named Ginnungagap. The first and still active Ginnungagap is an ambient side-project from Seattle, Washington, United States of Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O))), Lotus Eaters, Khanate, among others) formed in 2002. The music is a less guitar oriented version of drone, utilizing many middle and far eastern instruments and keys. Guest musicians such as Dawn Smithson, Anthony Sylvester and Alexander Tucker have also appeared in some albums. They have recorded two full-length albums and two EPs since 2004.
